You can send and receive money after you’ve added your bank account to WhatsApp.

To add your bank account, you will need:

• An active account at an Indian bank that supports UPI (Unified Payment Interface). The primary phone number associated with this bank account must match the phone number of your WhatsApp account.

To add your bank account:

1. Tap More options > Settings > Payments > Add new account.
2. Tap Accept and Continue to accept our Payments Terms and Privacy Policy.
3. From the list of banks, tap the name of your bank.
4. Tap Verify via SMS > Allow. If WhatsApp already has permission to make and manage phone calls, you won’t need to grant permission.
5. Tap the bank account you want to add to send and receive payments with WhatsApp.
6. Tap Done.

Note:

• To send money, you will also need to verify the last 6 digits of your debit card and the expiration date.
• You will only have to accept the Payments Terms and Privacy Policy during your initial bank set up.
• If you don’t see your bank listed, it may not be supported.
• WhatsApp payments uses UPI and supports most major banks. The phone number associated with your WhatsApp account is used to identify your bank account information to enable payments. To learn more, please refer to this article.
• To use payments, make sure you’re using the latest version of WhatsApp. If you’re having trouble downloading it through the Google Play Store, visit whatsapp.com/download.

When you make a payment, WhatsApp creates the necessary connection between the sender and recipient of the payment, using Facebook infrastructure. We pass the transaction information to the bank partner, which is called a PSP (payment service provider), and to NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India), so they can facilitate the movement of funds between the sender’s and receiver’s bank accounts. Facebook does not use WhatsApp payment information for commercial purposes, it simply helps pass the necessary payment information to the bank partner and NPCI. In some cases, we may share limited data to help provide customer support to you or keep payments safe and secure.

No, when you make a payment, WhatsApp sends the encrypted UPI PIN to our bank partners, which are called payment service providers. WhatsApp cannot see and does not store the UPI PIN, which is encrypted by software provided by National Payment Corporation of India. Nor does WhatsApp store other sensitive payment information such as your one-time password (OTP), account number or full debit card details.
